Relationships Reflections

There are many relationships in the world. The main relationship that holds a key to my heart was the realtionship between my mother and I. What relattionships mean to me is that I have taking the time out to love a certain person for who they are and not what they do. My mother taught me the value of a meanigful relationship. No matter how many times I messed up, she did dicepline me, but there was never a point I doubted her love for me. With relationships with my friends today, I take thise same values that my mother taught me. I have friends who have giving me challenges, but what made our relationships stronger is that I was willing to work things out. You must never turn your back against someone who you say you love. My mother taught me that also, because she never turned her back on me. I feel the relationships that you have with your parents determine on what type of relationships that you will have later on in your life

Do We Really Need Assesments?

Growing up in Michigas we where rquired to take the MEAP test. The teachers drilled us over and over, I do not remeber how I did, But I know the standards for standerdized testing are different. In Georgia the children have to to take the CRT in 1, 3,and 5th grade. This test measure the students knowledge of skills and also measures if the school is meeting certain standards as far as taching There is so much pressure on thes kids and teachers to pass the test If a child does not pass the test, they have to go to summer shool and if they fail it again in the summer time, they have to repeat the current grade. I dont know if you guys know, but Georgia is under investigation for the teachers changing the scores on the test. I do not lik te standerdized testing apporoach. For instance, I am not a test taker, it seems like evry test I take, I do not do well, but I excell in the class work. I get real nervous and this may be the case for these other kids. If the schools do not meet a certain percentage of passsing scores, the school will loose money. There has to be a better way to asses our children and their skills.

In Jamaica, they have standerdized test as follows:

Designing, administering, placing and certifying students in the following examinations:
• Grade Six Achievement Test (GSAT)
• Grade Nine Achievement Test (GNAT)
• Junior High School Certificate (JHSC)
• Secondary School Certificate (SSC)
• Jamaica School Certificate (JSC)
• Vocational School Leavers’ Examination (For Carron Hall, Elim and Knockalva).

2. Designing instruments to assist teachers to monitor student progress:

• Grade One Readiness Inventory
• Grade Three Diagnostic Test
• Literacy Test at Grade 4.

They use there assesmnet to see whaer each child stands, and if they are learning. If a child does not demonstrate good skills on the test , they do not hold the child back. As research shows many countries perform better on staderdized test then the children of the United States.

War in Iraq

I really wish this war would end. This is not about weapons. My concern is what about the children who need to be in school. I have never been in a war zone, but how are they able to learn and cope with what is going on around them. I am really looking into more information to help them. I know Obama is in the process of ending the war, but I really feel for the children. They have seen so much and seen their family members die because of nonsense.

Stressors on Children’s Development

I have a childhood friend who always the best of everything, her family had had more money than I have ever seen. They used to party and go out of town. I can remember my mother talking about how they need to save money. As the years passed, a tragic happened and they ran out of money. They were out on the street and hungry. My mother was kind enough to let them stay with us. She fed them and clothed them. I could not understand how they became homeless. My friend was a straight A student, but once this happened her grades slipped. I see the toil this bad circumstance took on her. They only stayed with us for a year. Today my friend has learned from her mother’s mistakes and is providing for her family. She always says, no one will ever know what it feels like to be hungry and lonely. I can understand where she is coming from.

Immunizations In Other Countries

For this section, I took another apporach. When I researched about immunizations, they basically was saying the same this as the states. As I did a little bit more reseach I found and article talking about the dangers of being vaccinated in the different regions of Africa, Eastern Europe, South America, and Asia. Reasons why it is not as safe because many of these places lack the resources they need to maiantain the health of children. Often times they have to reuse needles, and certain medicines are very limited. This has sparked an interest in me. I want to find ways o educate my peers so these children can get the proper health care. i am an advocate for health care at my school, so this should be a great investment.

IMMUNIZATIONS

Immunizations are very important in the United States. Working in a Pre K setting, our children must have a certain series of shots before the age of five. If they are not updated, they are not allowed to start school. In many cases, some children have to go back for updates, if parents fail to do this during the school year, their child has to sit the rest of the year out. Here is a funny story I like to share, I am afraid of needles, when I was in grade school I was a real convincing little child. My mother would faithfully take me to the doctor, and everytime I would get out of the shots that was needed. As the years passed, it was time for me to go to college, I had to get a physical before I went to school. All those shots that I put off, I had to get tehm all at once. My arms were sore. I had five shots in each arm, plus a tb shot. I will never do that again.

Having a Baby in Germany

Germany Doctors do not communicate with their patients, like American doctors do. If you have a question about child birth you have to request the specific information. Germany doctors believe in holistic medicines such as acupuncture. Instead of antibiotics, the doctors or midwives will prescribe herbal teas or hepatic medicines. You must choose a midwife. During childbirth, some mothers are offered warm baths to ease the pain. Some hospitals in Germany induce labor if the mother is past her due date by 13 days, but most of the time the doctors just wait till the baby comes.

The Wonderful Birth of Kelsy Richardson

I do not have any kids at the moment, but I have seen many births, and I must say that they are beautiful experience. I am going to talk about my birth, I have heard it over and over again. On August 18, 1981, my mother was rushed to Mercy Hospital in Baltimore, Md. She was in deep pain but she chose not to use any drugs, after all I was her third child. My dad anticipated the birth of his only girl. He asked the doctors how long will it take for me to arrive, they told him at least five hours. My father went outside to smoke a cigarette to calm his nerves, why did he do that. When he came back to the room, my mother was gone, he started to frantic, screaming where was his wife. Well little did he know, as soon as he went outside to smoke the cigarette, I was born. Once he came back in, my mother was in the recovery room. Still to this day, I tease him about missing my birth.

My Connections to Play

Two Quotes that summarizes childhood play in my eyes:
Play energizes us and enlivens us. It eases our burdens. It renews our natural sense of optimism and opens us up to new possibilities.
Stuart Brown, MD
Contemporary American psychiatrist

Play is our brain's favorite way of learning.

Diane Ackerman
Contemporary American author

When I was younger, my parents where my biggest supporters of play. They new how much I loved playing house so they provided the house and the dolls for me to have my own dramatic play area. Once they found out my dream was to be a teacher, I had all sorts of teacher sets and copies of homework lessons. I think parents should pay attention to their child's habits so they will have and can encourage appropriate play.
I think children's play of today revolves around what happens at home or what happens on the news. Play is not what it used to be. I whiteness more negative play then positive play in my classroom. I think parents need to find time and teach their children how to play like they used to play when they was growing up. I feel I had a great childhood and all I did was play. I really did not watch TV or play video games. I stayed outside all day until the streetlights came on, and I think we need to go back to these play days.

NAEYC AND DEC CODE OF ETHICS

" Helping children and adults achieve their full potential in the context of relationships that are based on trust, respect, and positive regard."

I can relate to this because I am always trying to plan activities for children to do with their parents so they can build their growing relationships, also to help cater to positive parental involvement.

"Recognizing that children are best understood and supported in the context of family, culture, community, and society."

This reminds me of converstations that I have with my friends. They are always wondering why I like to teach children who are bad. I explain to them that children are not bad, but they are reaching out to be heard and understood and this part of the ethics explains my reasoning.

"To recognize and respect the uniqueness and the potential of each child"

Each child is special in my eyes, and what works for Sally, may not work for John. As teachers we need to recognize that and treat each child with dignity and respect and to remember that each child is capable of learning.

I SO LOVE HER!!!!!

This is my younger cousin Rogerlynn......<3

My Dad, Step-Mom, and Me

This picture was taken the day after their wedding.

My Lovely Mother Florence Richardson

This picture was taken a couple of months before she died.

PERSONAL CHILDHOOD WEB

Florence Richardson

This lady holds a very special place in my heart. She is my mother. My mom taught me how to be a woman and a friend to those around me. My mother has always been there through the thick or thin. My mother never hesitated to put me, my brothers, and my friends in our right state of mind. As a child all the way through my adult life, she made me feel like I was her special child, she made everyone feel special, even strangers. I knew she cared about me because she always told me she loved me. My mother is no longer here, but her memory is still inside of me. I will never forget the spankings, the lectures, the hugs, and the compassion for others. My mother has taught me how to be the perfect mother, wife and friend.

Aldrow Richardson

This very strong and powerful man is my father. He is a Federal officer, so being the only girl, you can imagine what I had to go through.  LOL This man is such a teddy bear, on the exterior he looks all mean and tuff, but on the inside he is soft as cotton. My father really made me feel like I was the only princess in the world, he still does. He nurterd me very well, he would never let anything happen to me. Still till this day, my father feels I am 6 years old, he says he wants to maintain the sweet little innocent girl. I have never let my father down, and I work very hard and strive to be the best, so I will never let him down.

Gwen Richardson

Mrs. Gwen is my step-mother. She has only been in my life for the last three years. But if you was to come around us, you would think I have known her for my entire life. Mrs. Gwen has always showed how much she cares for me, from the first time I met her, she always smiles and talks to me about what I am feeling on daily basis. I talk to Mrs. Gwen more then I talk to my Dad. She encourages me to be the best, as she says, I am her only daughter and she is here from my needs, and I truly appreciate her for that. I have a genuine love for her, and she keeps me motivated.

Rogerlynn Hess

Rogerlynn is my first cousin on my moms side. We are four months apart, but I am the oldest. Growing up, Rogerlynn spent the majority time at our house, she was my best friend. Until one day, my family had to move, I thought I would never see her again. As years passed, I can remember the fun times we had, the hugs the tears and motivational speeches. When I was 24, my mother died. I went to the funeral, and I ran into Rogerlynn. We had been apart for 15 years. But once we reconnected, it is like we never part. From that day, we never lost contact. Rogerlynn tells me on several occasions how she looks up to me, and how very proud of me she was. In the present day, if I am feeling a bit discouraged, Rogerlynn is there to offer her moral support.

Dr. Barefield

Dr. Barefield was my college professor at Clark Atlanta University. I had majority of my practicum classes with her. The first day I stepped in her class, she gave out hugs. She expressed you may never know what a person is going through, but if you give out hugs, it will make anyone feel special. I use this technique with my students. I hugged them at the begging of class and at the end of the school day. Dr. Barefield offered her wisdom about teaching and I have gained many helpful ideas for my classroom. Dr. Barefield has retired from Clark, but she is still available for advice or just to have a talk. I call her from time to time to check on her and I value our time we spend with each other.

Gavin's Dragonfly

I have a student named Gavin, he tends to stay to his self. Gavin is really creative and he loves to make things in art. I have uploaded his draogonfly. Gavin took three popsicle sticks two beans and a piece of string to make his dragonfly.
I love his creativity!!!!!

Children's Literature

I feel that it is important for parents and teachers to read to children as early as possible. when I talk to my friends who have children, many of then do not realize that when a child first reads a book, is when they are telling stories through the pictures. I tend to encourage my parents to read a story to their child daily, and then let their child read the story back to them. My favorite all time book is the Cat in the Hat by Dr. Seuss. The reason why this book is my favorite is because this is the first book I was able to read all by myself....
Great childhood memories!!!!!!

SUPER EXCITED

Not only am I excited about my first bog, it is my first time in Graduate School. I cannot explain the joy that I am feeling. This is one step closer to my dream job of having my own HEAD START SCHOOL!!!!!! I love children and being a change agent for the future is what keeps me motivated. No obstacle is too big for my students. Many of them just need that extra push, I am here for them.

HAPPY JOURNEYS EVERYONE!!!!
